This is one of Avon’s flagship products.  A box of samples is included in the kit for each new Avon representative.  Why?  Because it’s an awesome product.  It received a “Best of Beauty” award from Allure magazine.

What does it do?  Advanced Wrinkle Corrector starts to rebuild collagen within 48 hours - which reduces deep wrinkles by up to 50% (based on a clinical grading test after 12 weeks of use).

Here’s my personal review: At first I thought this product would be too thick for my face.  It’s a very thick - almost ointment-like product.  However, that’s not the case at all.

After I washed my face, I smoothed it over my face and neck and while it did go on rather thick, it quickly absorbed into my skin.  Within a few minutes, my face felt dewy and very nice.  My original intention was to use it as a night cream, but it’s not really moisturizing enough for that.  So, I’ve been using it for day wear and it’s been perfect.

I noticed a difference in my face by the third day.  My skin feels smoother and softer.  It looks like the fine lines at the corners of my mouth have started to diminish.  Also, the deeper lines on my forehead are much less noticeable.  I really love this product and will definitely continue using it — especially since I can purchase it for $10 off in Campaign 18 for only $21.99 (regularly $32.00)

Anew Clinical Eye Lift

This product came out a few years ago and has passed the test of time.  Like the Advanced Wrinkle Corrector, this Anew product was also a “Best of Beauty” award winner from Allure magazine.

What makes this eye treatment so special?  Well, the divided container is a convenient way to package the upper eyelid gel with the lower lid cream.  You only have to purchase one product to get two different eye treatments.  But, aside from the packaging, what else makes this eye system so popular?

SKIN CARE BASICS: The Four Keys to a Beautiful Face

Makeup is wonderful and every girl should have a heaping drawer full.  However, if the facial skin isn’t properly cared for, it will detract from the beauty of the face.  Simple as that. 

Dullness, uneven texture, large pores, deep lines and wrinkles, bags and dark circles under the eyes, and discoloration cannot be hidden under a layer of makeup. 

No, you must take great care of your skin for your actual beauty to shine through.  Makeup can only accentuate your lovely skin and highlight what you’ve already got goin’ on.

For some women, this is a confusing topic.  They aren’t sure what they need to do to start a skin care routine.  They think they can’t afford it.  But, honestly, can you afford not to?

I recommend keeping it simple at first and add on special treatments as needed. 

It goes like this:

Step One:  Cleansing

The first step in any skin care regimen should be cleansing. 

Using a good cleanser for your skin type will provide many benefits including deep cleaning, removing makeup, toning, softening and smoothing, and leaving your skin feeling hydrated.

While some recommend cleansing the face in the morning and at night, I only recommend a good cleansing at night.  In the morning, just rinse your face in slightly warm water to remove any excess night moisturizer.  Your face makes natural oils while you sleep that you don’t want to strip away with a cleanser.

Use a makeup remover first if you’re wearing mascara or other eye makeup that requires it.  Sometimes, eye makeup can be too much for a cleanser to remove all by itself.

What cleansers do I recommend?

AVON SOLUTIONS: Day/Night Cleanser Combo - If you’re in your 20’s and under, the Avon Solutions line is a very good choice if you’re not dealing with aging skin issues.  This combo has one cleanser for the morning and another for the evening.  They help skin look and feel awake and refreshed.  This is available for oily skin and normal skin.  Retail:  $12.50

ANEW REJUVENATE: Revitalizing 2-in-1 Gel Cleanser - If you’re in your 30’s, this cleanser offers great deep cleansing and toning.  It will help help reduce the early signs of aging.  Retail:  $15

Step Two: Moisturizer

The cardinal rule of moisturizers is that everyone needs it - even those with oily skin.  The key is to select the right moisturizer for your skin depending on what skin care concerns you have or what you’re trying to achieve.

Most skin care regimens have two different moisturizers.  This is important.  You’re going to want to use a “day” moisturizer for daytime that has an SPF rating of at least 15 and a “night” moisturizer for the evening that doesn’t have any SPF protection (when you don’t need it).

A good moisturizer will probably be the most expensive item in your skin care routine, but it can make all the difference in how your skin looks - so, don’t skimp here.  Look for promotions (Avon has them all the time) and buy then.

What exactly does moisturizer do?  Well, it can smooth fine lines and refine your pores.  It can resore your skin’s healthy glow and even skin tone.  It can reduce discolorations and blotchiness.  It can noticeably reduce wrinkles and restore volume to your facial skin.

What do I recommend?

AVON SOLUTIONS: Day Cream SPF 15/Night Cream Combo - If you’re in your 20’s and under, this is a great choice.  This product combines your day moisturizer and your night moisturizer into one convenient divided tub.  Retail:  $17.50

ANEW REJUVENATE: Day Revitalizing Cream SPF 25 & Night Revitalizing Cream - If you’re in your 30’s, Anew’s Rejuvenate line is great for smoothing fine lines and refining pores, brightening dull skin, as well as addressing the early signs of aging.  Retail:  $32/each (currently on sale in Campaign 18 for $39.99 for both)

Step Three:  Eye Cream

The skin around the eye contains no fatty tissue and can tend to  wrinkle and thin out as we age.  Eye creams help thicken the skin around the eye area and keep it well hydrated to prevent wrinkling.

At what age should I begin to use an eye cream?  Isn’t eye cream just for mature skin? 

This is a myth.  As soon as you begin a daily regimen of skin care (hopefully in your teens or early 20’s) you should include eye cream as part of that daily routine.  You don’t want to be playing “catch up” with this.  The eye area is the most susceptible of any area on your face for dryness, fine lines, and wrinkling.  So, starting when you’re young will be a big plus in maintaining youthful, beautiful skin.

Some eye creams come in a combination formula with one type of cream for the upper eye (the lid) to lift and tighten and another one for under the eye to help lighten & brighten and reduce puffiness.  Both are fine.  It just depends on what your needs are.

Gently apply eye creams working from the outer eye toward the inner eye.  You never want to stretch this delicate skin outward.  This could damage the skin - especially after doing this repeatedly during your skincare routine every day.

What eye creams do I recommend?

Well, Avon has a whole collection of eye creams that complement each of their ANEW systems (Rejuvenate, Alternative, and Ultimate).  However, I’m going to recommend the ANEW CLINICAL EYE LIFT product for a couple of reasons.  First, it’s a great eye cream no matter which system you’re using.  And, second, Avon is running a wonderful promotion for it and it’s so affordable no one should have to go without eye cream.

Step Four:  Exfoliation

This is the step that many people leave out of their weekly skincare routine.  It’s too bad because exfoliating can have the most immediate results of any step in your skincare regimen.

What is exfoliation?  When we exfoliate, we are removing the top layer of dead skin cells from the face.  These dead cells give a dull and uneven tone to the skin.  Removing them creates an instant and dramatic improvement to the skin’s appearance.

How do I exfoliate?  There are a couple of different ways you can exfoliate your skin.

First, there is a microdermabrasion system.  This uses very fine grains that buff off the dead skin cells without causing damage to the structure of the skin.  You don’t want to use a cheap, drugstore facial scrub on your face.  The large grains in these scrubs can tear your face and cause broken capillaries underneath the skin.  With a microdermabrasion system, the grains are extremely fine and will not damage your skin.

You can go to a spa for a professional microdermabrasion treatment, or you can use an at-home option.  I think the at-home option is very comparable and will provide the same results for a fraction of the cost.

The second type of exfoliation is the chemical peel.  Rather than scrubbing the dead skin cells off, this method uses a mild chemical to dissolve the dead skin cells and clear them away from your skin.  This service is offered at most spas, but can also be done at home with good results for a lot less money.

What exfoliation products do I recommend?

Avon’s Advanced Dermabrasion System - This at-home dermabrasion system is the first 4-level micro-dermabrasion system on the market.  Retail:  $28

Avon’s Advanced Retexturizing Peel - This advanced exfoliator safely retexturizes and resurfaces the skin.  This system uses cotton pads to apply the peel.  Retail:  $25

Conclusion

While it may seem daunting to try to figure out which products you need, once you understand each step of the skin care process and what your individual skin’s needs are, it’s much easier to select products.

Bond Girl 007 Forever Perfume.  Is it Bond-worthy? 

 

I received my Campaign 17 orders today and I got my demo bottle of Bond Girl 007 Forever Perfume.  This is the second in Avon’s series of Bond Girl perfumes.  This version also comes in the curvacious trademark bottle that Bond Girl perfume has become known for.  However, this second installment comes in a deep purple bottle.  The weight is 1.7 ounces.

So, what does it smell like?  Well, it’s being touted by Avon as containing sleek citrus, sexy florals, and smoky woods.  I can smell the florals and woods, but I don’t smell any citrus.  Even after wearing it a while, I didn’t smell any citrus.  But, maybe it’s just me.

Do I like it?  I am drawn to fragrances like Spotlight, Haiku, and the original Bond Girl 007 (in the pink bottle).  These are bold and strong scents.  I like people to smell me when I walk into a room.  This one is more subtle like Just Play or Brazil Beat.  It’s a very nice scent and up close would be sensual and sexy.  But, it’s not one that would be very obvious to people around you.  For instance, if you work in an office, people probably wouldn’t be able to smell this fragrance after an hour or two unless they were close to you.  This isn’t the kind of fragrance that will carry in the air as you walk by.  It’s meant to be enjoyed up close and personal.

I wouldn’t wear this to a luncheon with the girls, but I would definitely wear it on a date with my husband.  The subtle allure of it would definitely be a big plus while sitting close for an intimate dinner or snuggled up at the movies.  It’s a fragrance that’s meant to be enjoyed in two’s - not in large groups.

Also, it would be a good choice if you worked in an environment where they discouraged heavy perfume (such as a hospital, doctor’s office, small office, or around people who are allergic or sensitive to perfumes). 

So, is it Bond-worthy, in my opinion?  Yes, it absolutely is.  While the fragrance is light and subtle, it is very pleasant, mysterious, and sexy.  The bottle absolutely says “sexy.”   Put it all together and it has all the qualities you’d expect from a Bond Girl.  So, it’s a resounding YES - this is definitely a true Bond Girl.  I give it a 4-Lipstick Rating - It’s very, very nice, but it didn’t knock my socks off and take my breath away like a 5 rating would imply.

Every time a new skin care product comes out, it has a new ingredient with a fancy-sounding name.  But, what is this stuff and how does it work to make us look younger?

The latest product that Avon has developed is their Anew Ultimate Night Gold Emulsion with Pro-Sirtuin TX Technology.  Huh?  You’re kiddin’ right?

Okay, so let’s take a look at what this stuff is and what it does:

 

 Pro-Sirtuin TX Techology

In late 1999, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology announced their discovery of proteins called sirtuins.  These are basically “youth” proteins that can extend a living organism’s life.  Avon’s research and development department heard about it and a light bulb went on.  They realized that skin cells contain sirtuin proteins and figured if they could boost the skin’s production of these sirtuin proteins, they could promote youthful-looking skin.

So, Avon’s scientists worked on this project in secrecy for seven years until they developed a formula they were satisfied would do the trick.

How does it work, though?

Well, Pro-Sirtuin TX Technology works like this.  It boosts the skin’s creation of sirtuin proteins - thus, allowing the cells to do what they do ONLY BETTER and more effectively.  Healthy cells will perform better than unhealthy cells do.  By boosting the sirtuin proteins, the cells’ repair functions (such as collagen rebuilding and UV light damage repair) are increased in effectiveness.  Firmness and elasticity is also increased by the boosting of these proteins.

In a 12-week study done by an independent dermatologist, 97% of the study participants showed improvement in fine lines and wrinkles.

Clinical associate professor of dermatology at New York University, Arielle Kauvar, said “This is definitely a fresh idea.”  She went on to say that Avon had developed a new technology that increased the lifespan of sirtuin in the skin which would, theoretically, cause the skin to create more collagen.  She felt that this new technology would stimulate collagen production, increase firmness of the skin and, over time, could reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Well, that’s pretty impressive.  But does it work?

 

MY 7-DAY TRIAL

I have been personally using the Anew Ultimate Night Gold Emulsion for seven days now and I can really tell a difference in my skin - moreso than with any other anti-aging product I’ve ever used.  Here’s what I’ve noticed so far:

• My skin is smoother than it was before.
• It feels moister than it did.
• When I apply the emulsion at night after I wash my face it sometimes stings a little in some spots.
• My skin feels much, much softer than it did previously.

It’s a gel formula, and I wasn’t expecting that.  But, it’s very smooth and has a nice fragrance.  For me, it has been great.  But, I wanted to know what the science was behind the product.  I’m sure I’m not the only one who was interested in that, right?

AVON PRO 3-IN-1 LIP WAND   

 

Okay folks.  I wasn’t going to get this demo because I have SO MANY recent lipstick or gloss product purchases, but it looked so cool I had to try it.  I’m really glad I did.  I bought the “Berry” shade and it was very pink - just like I like it.

It was easy to take apart to get to each section (something that’s not always easy with these types of products).  The size of each section is kind of miniature - but, if you add them all up you get one full-sized product, I guess.

The lip liner was very nice.  It wasn’t like some of those that just moosh all over your lips and make you look like The Joker.  It went on very smooth and subtle.  Then, the lipstick section came next.  This lipstick is kind of small, but that made it easy to put it just where I wanted it.  It looked fine just like that.

But, when I added the gloss (which was really pink), it looked very cool.  It’s very glossy and wet-looking.  I love lip gloss like that - but, I know some don’t.  This isn’t like the glazewear (which is not always super shiny glossy - depending on the shade).  This was very glossy and it complemented the lipstick and liner perfectly.

It’s nice that you’ve got pre-coordinated colors for all three products, as sometimes it’s difficult to know what shade of liner to get with lipstick.  With this product, it’s all done for you and the shades were perfect together.

Overall, I’ll have to give this one a 4-Lipstick Rating for doing exactly what it’s supposed to, but it loses 1-Lipstick in the ratings for being on the sort of small size.  But, its small size can be a plus if you’re carrying it in your purse where you wouldn’t want all the bulk of three full-sized products.

I have been off for a while due to family circumstances.  My Mother passed away on May 23, 2009 — and April, May, and most of June have been sort of a blur for me.  But, it’s time to move forward and get back to normal things.  So, on that note, I’d like to introduce you to the new and exciting things that are coming out for Campaign 14 2009.

BRAZIL BEAT

Featured on the cover of Campaign 14 is our newest fragrance, Brazil Beat.  This is a wonderful scent for summer.  I received a demo bottle in my Campaign 13 order and I really like it.  It’s a very light scent - so it’s not going to be overpowering when the temperatures rise.  It has a fruity and floral top note with a woodsy base.  It’s very nice.  Plus, in Campaign 14, the price is right at only $9.99 for a 1.7 oz bottle of Eau de Toilette Spray. 

Or, if you like to layer your fragrances, we also offer this fragrance in a body spray, shimmering body lotion, and a shower gel.  I did like this fragrance a lot, however, it does tend to fade pretty quickly.  My husband could still smell it hours later on my skin - but, he had to snuggle up to my neck to smell it.  For those who like a ligher summer fragrance, this would be a good choice.  If you like a heavier or stronger fragrance, I would pass on it.

SPECTRACOLOR LIPSTICK

The next item I’d like to highlight for Campaign 14 is our new Spectracolor Lipstick.  This stuff is really, really cool.  I also have a demo of this.  There are two shades of liquid lipstick inside this tube.  One is light and one is darker.  You have the option of seven different shade settings - from lighter to darker - depending upon which shade you’d like for that moment.  Once you’ve set it to the desired shade, you simply push on the bottom and the blended lipstick comes through little holes in the top of the applicator.

I bought the “The Pinks” shade and I really like it.  It’s a little weird at first because the lipstick goes on very thin - almost like some of those old-style all-day lipcolors that would go on really thin and then dry really weird on your lips.  However, this lipstick never dries and it stays very glossy for a long time.  I like the shade intensity with the different settings, I like the applicator, and the price is good for a top-end lipcolor product at $7.99.  The price will go up to $9.50 in furture campaigns.

If you’re a lipcolor fanatatic (like me), you’ll really flip over this new product.  It gives you both a daytime shade and an evening shade all in one container.  Fantastic idea!

Wow!  Courtney Cox looks fantastic on Avon’s Campaign 8 brochure!  She’s the spokesperson for Avon’s new fragrance called Spotlight (page 5).

The fragrance debuts in Campaign 8 and is very, very nice.  I didn’t think I would like it based on the ingredient list (bergamot, silver accord, freesia, mimosa, vanilla, cashmere and sandalwood).  But, I have to say that this smells like something much more expensive than $22.50.

The only complaint I have about Spotlight isn’t in the product at all - it’s the bottle.  I think the bottle is very plain and uninspiring.  I wish they would have put it in a more elegant bottle befitting it’s wonderful fragrance.

I bought a demo bottle and have been wearing it lately.  People have asked me what I’m wearing and commenting on how nice it it.  So, I think it will become a regular in my fragrance collection.  I love it.

The next product I tried for Campaign 8 (although it actually came out Campaign 6 and I didn’t try it then) is the Magix Face Perfector (page 28).  Reese Witherspoon has been promoting several Avon products, and Magix Face Perfector is one of them.  We all know she’s absolutely gorgeous - so whatever she’s doing is working for her, right?

I was skeptical, though, when another Avon rep was telling me how flawless it made her skin.  She could see my doubt and so she made me try it on the back of my hand.  It is very thick (almost the consistency of that kindergarten paste we used when we were kids (you know, the one some kids ate).

As I smoothed it on my hand, I could visibly see my skin get smoother and the pores disappear.  I was amazed.  This stuff really was great.  So, I put an order in for some for me on my next order.

I’ve been using it on my face all week (which is a better indicator than the back of my hand).  I can honestly say that it does do what Avon claims it will do (”look naturally flawless & banish shine up to 10 hours”).  My skin stays matte all day long and it has visibly reduced my pores significantly.  I love this stuff and I hope Avon never stops making it.

Next on my list was the new Cuticle Balm.  This is new for Campaign 8 (page 33).  I was at a table with three other ladies and I took the lid off the little tin.  The smell was so nice that before I knew it all the ladies had snatched it away from me and were using it.  It smells heavenly - like lavendar and citrus.

I’ve used it a few times this week and I can tell a difference in my cuticles and nails already.

I have one complaint about it though.  Like the Spotlight - I don’t like the container.  This isn’t for asthetic reasons (as with the Spotlight).  This is for purely practical ones.  This little tin has a lid that will tear up your nails getting off.  I love this product, but I broke a nail getting the tin open.  I think if you twist it off slowly (rather than trying to pry it off with a nail under the lid) it might work better.  The other ladies didn’t have any trouble with the lid.  I have some carpal tunnel issues with my hands and wrists, so perhaps that’s why it was more difficult for me.  Otherwise - a really good product.

If you’re looking for a quality men’s fragrance set, look no further than Avon’s new fragrance “Signature” debuting in Campaign 8 (page 51).  I bought a demo of the after shave conditioner and it’s one of their best men’s fragrances in a long time.  I like it because it smells sophisticated and masculine.  It’s something I would love my husband to wear.

The top notes are green apple and grapefruit, the mid notes are bamboo and ginger, and the base notes are patchouli, white cedar and teakwood. 

At a price of only $17.50 for the Eau de Toilette Spray, it’s a great value for a high quality men’s fragrance.

Campaign 8 has a special promotion that offers the Signature Roll-on Anti-Perspirant Deodorant, After Shave Conditioner, and the Eau de Toilette Spray for $20 for all three.  If you have any men in your life with an April or May birthday, this would be a really nice gift set - without breaking the bank!

All the Liiv Botanicals products are also on special for Campaign 8 (pages 76-77).  For the first time every, you can buy one and get one for $1.99.  This is such a great deal.  I’ve tried the Sensuality fragrance and it’s really unique.  I love the way the plant essences give it like a peppery, spicy scent. 

Although I really love the way it smells, the fragrance doesn’t last  on me.  I bought a bottle as a demo, and I used it every day for a couple of weeks. 

I got a lot of compliments on it, but I always felt it was a little too light.  I did layer it with the Moisture Boosting Body Butter underneath and it lasted longer.

One of the nice things about the Liiv Botanicals is that they work for all skin types and are clinically and dermatologically tested and preservative free.

Okay, now for the best part of Campaign 8 - their new Anew Clinical Derma-Full X3 Facial Filling Serum (now, that’s a mouthful, huh?) on page 87.  This is one of Avon’s higher end skin care products at $54.  I bought some of this during Campaign 7 and I’ve been using it for the past week or so.  I love the way it feels when I put it on.

It’s to be used at night after you cleanse your face.  I put it on over my night moisturizer.  I’ve been using the Solutions 2-in-1 cleansers and moisturizers  (in the orange containers) and I like them a lot.  Anyway, back to the Derma-Full serum - it is very smooth and feels like silk.  I did get it pretty close to my eye area and it didn’t burn my eyes at all.  It wasn’t sticky or oily feeling.  I liked how it felt and it had a pleasant, light fragrance.

I haven’t been using this for very long, so it’s hard to tell yet how well it works.  But, in the week I’ve been using it, I can tell a difference in my skin.  It does feel smoother to me.  I’ll post again once I’ve been using it a while longer to let you know if my face feels fuller in the cheek area (the main claim for the product).

If you would like to have fuller cheeks, but are also dealing with jowls, Avon is also offering a new Derma-Full Facial Filling Cream, rather than the serum, for $34.  The serum has 3 times the amount of hyaluronic acid as the cream.  I haven’t used the cream, so I don’t know how it compares to the serum.  If you use it, I’d love for you to comment here about your experience.
